The median Gender Pay Gap displays men and women’s wages from highest to lowest and compares the number that is in the middle for each group. The difference in salary between the midpoint ranges is the pay gap figure. This tends to form the basis of most comparisons between organisations.
The mean Gender Pay Gap displays the average. This is calculated by adding up the wages of all the men and women employed and dividing it by the total number of staff in that group. The pay gap is the difference between the mean figures for men and women.
Key Drivers
Key Driver 1: Higher percentage of men in every quartile
In every quartile there are more men than women. The lowest percentage of women is in the third quartile at 23%, with men at 77%. The median pay gap for the upper quartile is 0.02%.
Key Driver 2: Anomalies in Upper Quartile
In the upper quartile the mean is 18.52%, whereas the median is -0.05% – this is the largest difference of mean and median in all the quartiles and can be explained by us having a small number of high earners in the very top of the quartile. The Median reflects a more realistic average for the quartile. The mean is affected by outliers in a way that the median is not (as explained above) and shows the importance of taking both the mean and median into account.
Key Driver 3: Pay parity in the lower quartile.
The lower quartile contributes the most towards women being paid more equitably in comparison towards men. Both the mean and median in this quartile are marginally different. This quartile also has the highest percentage of women at 49%.
